Planning To Work Abroad

Working abroad can be an exciting, rewarding and horizon broadening experience and if you take the time to plan ahead carefully before you go, you will make your transition into the overseas work place a smooth and successful one.

So, if you’re considering relocating overseas to take up a temporary assignment or you’d like to move abroad permanently and find work there are basically three main aspects of expatriation that you need to think about before you make your move and this article examines them for you.

1) Location

Unless you’re being relocated by your employer to a fixed location you will quickly discover that it’s a big wide world and you therefore have a great deal of choice when considering which country best suits your lifestyle and employment requirements. In an effort to narrow down your search a little consider any country you’re interested in in view of the following considerations.

i) The location’s distance from your home country and your family and friends – remember that there will be times you want or need to return home and/or to catch up with old faces. How easy and affordable will it be for you to go ‘back home’ should the need arise and how simple will it be for your friends and family to come and visit you?

ii) The weather – some countries are more or less hospitable in weather terms and someone who originally heralds from Tropical North Queensland may find it a struggle to cope with the wet, grey winters in England for instance and someone from Canada may find is a shock coping with the searing summer temperatures in Spain. Thinking about your ideal overseas location from a weather perspective may well cut down your choices!

iii) Your family – particularly if you’re expatriating with children you’ll need to think carefully about the healthcare and education facilities available overseas and also about getting your essential insurances in place before you go. Some countries are more expensive and restrictive than others…bear this in mind.

iv) Language barriers – if you’re considering moving to a country where the mother tongue is other than your own will this restrict your employment prospects? Can you overcome this by learning the language before you go or do you need to reconsider your destination?

2) Employment

Are you a professional in a given industry or do you have a flexible skill set that will allow you to seek work in many different sectors? Do your qualifications translate favourably and transfer directly overseas? What sectors would you like to work in, in which countries can you find work in a profession that suits you?

These are all questions you have to consider carefully. Next, if you’re moving overseas permanently you need to be practical and realistic and consider the long term employment prospects for you, your spouse and any other family members accompanying you…if you can find employment today how easy will it be to change employer or advance your career later in life?

You should then examine your desired location carefully and determine whether or not you need work permits, residency visas and permission to work and live abroad, if so you should get the ball rolling and apply as soon as possible in case of any paperwork and administrative delays.

Also consider the taxation and financial aspects of working abroad…remember that if you’re moving to a low cost country the economy will likely pay lower wages than you’re used to, will these be sufficient to sustain your ideal lifestyle?

3) Accommodation

Last but not least is the thought of finding somewhere to live abroad. By now you’ll have a clear favourite in the location stakes but now you need to examine the property market and whether it’s easy and affordable to rent accommodation when you first arrive and whether, long term, it’s possible for foreign residents to purchase freehold property abroad.

If you’re planning on moving abroad permanently you’ll also need to think about moving your household belongings and personal effects with you, and what about transporting your pets overseas too?

There are many relocation companies who specialise in relocating individuals and families abroad, these companies have a fantastic skills base to assist you with every single aspect of the process. If on the other hand you’re on a budget or looking to work abroad for a shorter period of time use the internet to find forums and information sites dedicated to expats, working abroad and the particular countries you’re interested in and you’ll quickly be amazed at the wealth of invaluable information out there.

6 Reasons Why Everyone Should Learn Spanish!?

1. Spanish isn't a foreign language anymore.

In the U.S., Spanish is rising ahead of any other non-English language at a rapid pace, with a steady flow of new immigrants from Latin America and growth in the already large Hispanic population. According to a Pew Research Center report, an estimated 37.6 million people in the U.S. speak Spanish as their first language and analysts predict the Latino population will reach approximately 128.8 million by 2060, likely making it the largest Spanish speaking country in the world. Proportionally, Hispanics will rise from around 16% of the U.S. population in 2010 to 30% by 2050. There are countless reasons for wanting to improve communications with such a big portion of the country, including things as simple as expanding your dating pool on OKCupid.

2. Learning Spanish will help your career.

With such a large Latino population in the U.S. and booming Latin economies outside the U.S., employers are desperate for people who speak Spanish. There is a huge demand in the U.S. for Spanish-speakers in nursing, construction management, and media, among many other positions. Big corporations are realizing the importance of reaching a market that will represent $1.5 trillion in purchasing power in the U.S. by 2015. Meanwhile, Latin America received a record $174 billion of foreign investment in 2012, and companies everywhere are expanding there, such as PepsiCo announcing a $5 billion investment in Mexico.

3. It will unlock a world of travel destinations.

There are approximately 329 million native Spanish speakers in the world, and they populate some of the coolest destinations in the world. You can leave behind the touristy resorts in Cancun and explore thousands of miles of cheap and beautiful Latin America cities, beaches, and trails. Venezuela, for instance, has the longest Caribbean sea coastline of any nation and is considered one of the most mega diverse countries on the planet, with more than 40 percent of its territory protected. Even if you do go to popular destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean, speaking the local language will help you get off the beaten path and see some real culture. And then of course you can book a trip to Spain and see the wonders of Barcelona, Madrid, Andalucia and more.

4. You can enjoy amazing books and movies.

Around 100 successful authors from 54 countries voted "El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha" by novelist Miguel de Cervantes as the best book of all time, and while the 17th century book is widely available in other languages, it, like any book, is best in its original language. Other Spanish-language authors you'll want to read are Chilean poet Pablo Neruda — many of whose works have not been translated — Gabriel García Márquez, Roberto Bolaño, Mario Vargas Llosa, and many more. And then there are the movies. Star directors Pedro Almodóvar, Alfonso Cuarón, and Guilermo Del Toro — who all have movies in their native language — should be enough to convince you of the richness of Spanish-language cinema.

5. Spanish is easy to learn.

Arabic has a completely different alphabet, French spelling and pronunciation is incredibly specific and tricky, and Chinese requires learning unique tones. Written Spanish, on the other hand, is almost completely phonetic — look at any Spanish word, and you can tell how it is pronounced. While mastering the grammar of Spanish can be a challenge, basic grammar is straightforward enough and many vocabulary words are similar to English. Since the number of Spanish speakers in the U.S. continues to rise, chances are it will become even easier to learn and practice this language.

6. Even the British are swapping French for Spanish.

The British Council's “Languages of the Future” report ranks non-English languages in order of importance for British citizens to learn, based on a thorough analysis of cultural, economical, and diplomatic factors. Spanish topped the list, followed by Arabic, French, and Mandarin. If the home territory of the English language — which is located just miles from France and which doesn't even have that many Spanish-speaking immigrants — has decided that Spanish is the best second language, then who are we to argue?

Facebook to buy messaging network WhatsApp

Deal worth $16bn will give social-networking firm access to 450 million people who use the cross-platform mobile app.

Facebook, the world's biggest social-networking company, says it is buying the mobile messaging service WhatsApp in a deal worth $16bn.
The purchase, announced on Wednesday, will leave WhatsApp with its own independent board.
WhatsApp is a cross-platform mobile app which allows users to exchange messages without having to pay telecom charges.
It is Facebook's biggest acquisition and comes less than two years after Mark Zuckerberg's firm raised $16bn in the richest technology-sector public stock offering.
The purchase includes $12bn in Facebook shares and $4bn cash.
It calls for an additional $3bn in restricted stock units to be granted to WhatsApp founders and employees that will vest over four years.
"The acquisition supports Facebook and WhatsApp's shared mission to bring more connectivity and utility to the world by delivering core Internet services efficiently and affordably," Facebook said in a statement.
The WhasApp deal translates to roughly nine percent of Facebook's market value and is bigger than any acquisition made by Google, Apple or Microsoft.
Google's biggest deal, Motorola Mobility, stood at $12.5bn, while Microsoft's largest was Skype - which allows users to make voice and video calls over the internet - at $8.5bn. Apple, meanwhile, has not done a deal above $1bn.

Separate service

Facebook, which has more than 1.2 billion members, said it will keep WhatsApp as a separate service, just as it did with Instagram, which it bought for about $715.3m.
WhatsApp has more than 450 million monthly active users. In comparison, Twitter had 241 million users at the end of 2013.
"WhatsApp is on a path to connect one billion people. The services that reach that milestone are all incredibly valuable," Zuckerberg, Facebook's founder and chief executive, said.
"I've known [WhatsApp founder] Jan [Koum] for a long time and I'm excited to partner with him and his team to make the world more open and connected."
Koum, who joins Facebook's board under the deal, said "WhatsApp's extremely high user engagement and rapid growth are driven by the simple, powerful and instantaneous messaging capabilities we provide."
In a blog post, Koum said, "Almost five years ago we started WhatsApp with a simple mission: building a cool product used globally by everybody. Nothing else mattered to us.

The tie-up gives WhatsApp "the flexibility to grow and expand, while giving me, [co-founder] Brian [Acton], and the rest of our team more time to focus on building a communications service that's as fast, affordable and personal as possible," Koum said.
Facebook reportedly sought to acquire another messaging firm, Snapchat, for $3bn last year.
